One Christmas when I was about 26 years old, I received an amazing and unexpected gift. My 78 year old grandmother had written down her 'memories' on an old typewriter. It was only about 20 pages long, but it contained a wealth of information and stories I would have never, ever known about her - someone I considered so dear to me.
I would have never known that she and her 11 (wow...11?) siblings had "piggy-back" races on the farm, or that it got so cold in the winters that they would have frost on their ceilings in the morning when they woke up. I wouldn't have known that she asked my grandfather to marry her one Halloween night, or that she didn't know his name wasn't really 'Ginger' until they applied for their wedding license. And I wouldn't have known that she sang in a quartet in her later years, and sold tapes in English and German all around the country.
Seeing her heart-felt memories revealed on these simple pages was so much better than any gift money could buy. They weren't all happy memories, but they were real....a part of her. I only wish that she had included more. Now my family's future generations will be able to enjoy these moments in time for years to come...

Remember, you don't have to be a professional author, or be particularly interesting or dramatic. My grandmother had only an 8th grade education, and I could have cared less about the typos and grammatical errors on the page. Her memoirs were special because they were personal...they were hers.
